The need to supply a nutritious meal came out overwhelmingly as our next most important consideration following research carried out with parents, teachers and local government officials. In an area where sometimes children only get one small meal a day, the incentive to attend school is greatly increased when there is a promise of food. It hugely improves performance and eventual achievement levels.

Azar launched its school meals sponsorship scheme earlier this year. A contribution of just £5 per child per month will provide a full, nutritionally balanced meal every school day for a Kisasa child. Part of this funding will be used to introduce a self-sustainable food growing and management system in order that the school will eventually be able to take responsibility for producing its own food.

At the moment we have just raised enough support to provide a cup of maize porridge for each child every day and are in the process of setting up a small kitchen area to get that underway.
