The School and Community Build Project Tanzania
The Azar schoolbuild would never have come about if the team had not gone to
Tanzania first to build houses with Habitat for Humanity. HFH is a fantastic
organisation that helps people all over the world living in extreme poverty to
build and own houses for themselves. The aim of HFH is to eliminate housing

Azar had no experience in contruction other than that obtained on the previous
HFH trip to Tanzania. It was clear that if we were going to succeed in building
a school we would need some expertise. We asked HFH to help us.
We figured that if we built some houses for HFH at the same time as the school
we could utilise the available skills and experience to build the school to be
sure of a safe and quality construction.
By the time we were ready to leave in August 2006 for the build we had raised
enough money for an eight classroom school and for eight houses (at around £1000 each). Fantastic! We handed the money over for the houses and the plan was
to build three local to the site whilst the team were in Tanzania.
The whole thing went very well. While half our team worked on the school the
others worked on houses, alongside the home-owners to be and the builder
assigned to the house by HFH. Half way through the teams swapped over so
everyone had a chance to work on both types of build.
By the time we came to leave, dedication ceremonies were held of handing over
each house to the new owners which was a very happy and joyous occasion for
everyone involved.
